The hotel is very clean and the staff is very friendly. I gave them 3 stars because I can literally hear every movement of the person above and next door to me. Not just footsteps but loud creaks and rocking. I can also hear the entire conversation of the people next door. I've never been able to hear people so loudly in a hotel room. Walls are super thin. Bring earplugs and don't expect to relax.

Overall, would come back, purely because of the excellent location and friendly front desk service. However, I do feel this Holiday Inn Express falls a bit below the average quality standards of other Holiday Inn Express locations I've visited.

4. The soap dispenser in the men's bathroom on the right side was without soap for the duration of our visit. Every morning for a week the soap dispenser was checked.

New, clean, friendly and roomy. Really like all of the available power outlets and USB ports. The TV screens are larger than most hotels and an AV panel has easy access as, it is mounted just below the wall mounted TV. Nice lighting with reading lamps attached to the beds headboard.

1. Rooms need multiple cleaning times. If maids only come immediately after breakfast when people are getting dressed/prepared for their day and never come back, then rooms won't be cleaned.

The strengths of this hotel are definitely in it's location (close proximity to a grocery store, restaurants, bars, and the tram system, as well as the friendly and helpful front desk staff.

2. The coffee at breakfast was atrocious...like water that has been died slightly brown. Everywhere else we went in Portland we had amazing coffee, but the hotel was an odd outlier in terms of quality and flavor.

A few things that desperately need to be improved upon:

The prolific use of plastic, from all of the condiments like jelly and peanut butter, to the cups (foam) and utensils (all plastic) was a bit depressing. Real metal utensils, non foam cups, and just a little concern about the environment would be more fitting, especially for a hotel in such a beautiful part of the country.

For what it is it's top notch. You know you're not getting anything unique or fancy, but what you do get is good. The rooms are nice, new, spacious and clean. There's a mini fridge included and the TV includes accessible hookups for everything you could want. And the free breakfast is actually well stocked and includes scrambled eggs, not simply some muffins. There's also a decent gym included that is well maintained and wasn't busy during my stay. It's a bit out of the way if you're visiting Portland, but that's not their fault, I knew that going in.

These were our 4 biggest issues with the Hillsboro Holiday Inn. At around $100 a night, and in the middle of a really nice, clean and modern neighborhood I guess we were a bit disappointed by the quality of our stay.

We would instead walk 5 minutes to a nearby Starbucks than drink the Holiday Inn's coffee. Buying locally and making a quality brew and putting a little sign saying it's local/free-trade/organic would be a nice little touch of localization guests would appreciate.

So friendly and helpful. The front desk dude out of his way to make sure we were set. Breakfast was amazing! Biscuits and gravy, bacon, pancakes and even rice with soy sauce. The rooms were posh and made me *gasp* just a little when I first walked in. Lovely, just lovely.

A room check in the morning and afternoon would be an optimal solution to this problem.

3. It was surprising in such an eco-conscious city to see no recycling options in the kitchen for waste. Instead a large amount of plastic and paper were all combined in one garbage bin. We can only hope this was sorted later.

Day 1 figured it would be refilled soon. Day 2 figured maybe it was a once-a-week-deal, but by day 6 I realized nobody is apparently checking whether the ground level bathrooms have soap, which is a bit concerning.
